SBS’s Catalyst is a uniquely powerful engine that drives all of the incredible capabilities of our sites and services, including our custom API, our web sites, our commercial solutions such as CobaltIP, and allows us to deliver and interact with information in profoundly new ways – fast.
Catalyst provides full data management functions from aggregation, extraction, processing (and normalizing), and text analysis for optimal indexing. Sophisticated and highly tuned indexing techniques allow for extremely fast query, data management, and business intelligence features. We have integrated both data, as well as advanced OCR and image processing techniques.
For search, it all starts with intelligent query parsers to allow querying any dataset using syntax with which the user is familiar (e.g., using syntax from the USPTO is supported). Our query processing also recognizes common special queries and boosts selected results. Query options include “more like this,” natural language search (e.g., copy and paste several paragraphs from a technical paper and search on that), and matrix queries – allowing for fast data mining. We also provide powerful result set analysis such as faceting and real-time clustering.
Besides all the data and powerful capabilities “out of the box”, we have also adapted our engine to provide for real-time integration of other content into search/indexes and also for the integration of any important analytical (meta, calculated, relational) information into the overall architecture. This allows for wholly innovative techniques in analyzing, relating, and understanding the data across vast and disparate collections.

For those clients interested in integration of our data (and theirs if they want) into their own systems, Catalyst provides an API supporting all of its powerful features. Reinventing the wheel is expensive, and in the case of Catalyst, ~impossible (we have built and adapted it over 5+ years on the crucible of the most challenging end-to-end data management considerations). Our API gives our clients the power of “big data” without losing focus on their core business.
Because we have armed Catalyst with the ability to fly at the bleeding edge of search and scale considerations, clients can iterate their solution and interact with data in ways heretofore unimaginable (or at least cost-prohibitive).
About our data: Our core product provides patent data, including the US patents and apps, European Patent Office (EPO) patents and apps, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) collection, and Japanese abstracts. We also offer German patents (in German) in full-text and 50+ other patent authority documents (biblio and abstract only). Importantly, our data is enriched with US maintenance events, reassignment details (full reassignment history), DOCDB simple family, normalized assignee – and a variety of search fields that can be displayed, sorted, faceted; with interesting meta-data about a patent such as number of claims, inventors, citations (forward and reverse), and others. Our US patent record is generated from an average of over 8 data sources (not including our own proprietary meta) – keeping you on top of data as it is published, modified, or augmented.

To maximally leverage the power of Catalyst, we offer the service of integrating internal sources of data into a hosted solution (a secure and individual instance of encrypted data). Most companies are not in the business principally of generating or managing data, but rather use data as a means to enrich their business – let us do the heavy lifting of data management and take advantage of the powerful tools enabled by Catalyst.
